Hemmed by the Arabian Sea in the west, Western Ghats in the east, Nethravathi River in the south and Phalguni River in the North, Mangalore city has numerous historical references in the early and medieval history. Mangaluru, the jasmine fragrant city of tulunadu – the land of tulu speaking people got its name from ‘Mangaladevi’ the deity of the 9th-century Mangaladevi temple. It is believed that the coastal belt was reclaimed from the sea by the legendary sage - the axe-wielding warrior Parashurama. The 5 feet high bronze idol of the 10th century Manjunatheshwara temple on the hills of Kadri is considered as the oldest of the South Indian temples.The 7th century Zeenath Baksh Juma Masjid at Mangaluru and the Milagres Church, dating to the 17th century glorify the cultural diversity of Mangaluru since ancient times. Even now Hinduism is the major religion followed by Islam and Christianity. There are also people who believe in the religions of Jainism, Sikhism and Buddhism in Mangaluru.

Tulu is the predominant language in Mangalore and Konkani is in the second place and Kannada stands the third position followed by Malayalam. In this coastal city of the richest linguistic diversity many people speak in languages such as Beary, Urdu, English and Hindi also. Being a clean, calm, peaceful, educated, obedient industrial city, Mangaluru is attracted by the immigrants from all the parts of India. So one can hear Gujarati, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Punjabi, Bengali and many more languages when passed through the busy streets of the city. Multilingualism in Mangaluru is an alternative way of looking at the integrity in diversity of India with peaceful harmonious living.

Tulunadu possesses a heritage diverse cultural tradition which is unique in many ways. The traditional art forms of Bayalata (Yakshagana),

Theru (Car festival), Bhootha Kola & Aati Kalenja (Devotional folk arts), Kambala (Buffalo race), Korida katta (Fight between two roosters), Nagamandala (Worshiping snake), Pilivesha (Tiger dance) attract the attention of the visitors.

Tuluvas love seafood - spicy and tasty seafood like Marwai sukka, Jenji ajadina, Meen fry, Bondas, Yetti masala are the speciality of Mangaluru. Different types of Chutneys and Seasonal herbs dishes are also famous here. The famous Mangalore cuisines of Sweet Buns, Neerdosa, Moode, Kottige, Pathrode and Korirotti are the delicacy from tulunadu region.

The fabulous sandy beaches of Someshwara, Ullal, Panambur, Thannirbavi and Sasihithlu are the all-time attraction of the tourists. The integrated theme park at Pilikula spread over an area of 370 acres has many attractions of cultural, educational and scientific interest. The park comprises the enchanting Pilikula Lake, Botanical Garden & Arboretum, Biological Park, Science centre & 3D Planetarium, Heritage village, Golf Club, Amusement and Water Park. Kateel Durgaparameshwari Temple, Kudroli Gokarnanatha Temple, Kadri Park, Sultan Bathery watchtower built by Tipu Sultan, St. Aloysius Chapel built in 1880, Ullal Durgah are the other most visited tourist destinations in Mangalore. The port city of Mangaluru is well connected by road, rail and air.

About Club

During the 41st year of formation of Rotary club of Mangalore South, the Inner Wheel Club of Mangalore south was formed with 41 members on 21st September 2017. The Rotary club president Rtn YuvarajnAcharya and Past President Rtn Chako took initiative for the formation of the club. The support of AG Rtn Divakar Amin, Past Treasurer Rtn Rajan Nambiar, Rtn T A Ashokan and all the other Rotarians of the club is remembered. The District chairman for 2017-18 Mrs Jayasree Urs inaugurated the club with Mrs Sheeja Nambiar as the Charter President, Mrs Geetha Amin as the Charter secretary and Mrs Prema Muralidhar as the Charter Treasurer. District ESO Mrs Anuradha Nandakumar who was our motivator and PDC Mitra Prabhu, PDC Malini Hebbar and PDC Chithra Rao graced the occasion with their presence. We received the charter on 7th December 2017 with the No: 6562. With limited activities the club continued to function for the year.

The charter team was continued for the next year too with slight changes in the committee. It was decided to follow the ladder system as in the district to accept the leadership of the club. The installation ceremony was conducted on 23/07/18 with the Past President of Inner Wheel Club of Surathkal, Mrs Swarnalatha Konchady as the Installation officer. The club started to gear up during this time. The journey to Hanbal with Mrs Chandrika Sudhir, Past President of IWC Mysore to attend COTI was a great experience. The excitement and enthusiasm shown by Mrs Chandrika in explaining her experience as the president filled a lot of energy in the members who accompanied her and gave an idea about what all can be done in Inner Wheel. And we upheld the motto of the Inner Wheel “Friendship and service” Thus during the visit of the Chairman, Dr Sarika Prasad we could present a better half yearly report. By the end of

the year the club could bag 8 awards – Two first places, two second places and four first places.

Mrs Geetha Amin was installed as the president for the year 2019-20 and Mrs Sheetal Karkera the secretary by PDC Mrs Shamim Kunil, one of the sources of inspiration for us, on 14th July 2019. The club members attended all the programmes in the district level and made friendship with many members of other inner wheel clubs. We also excelled in service oriented projects like vocational training, helping orphans and HIV infected children. Friendship among the club members was strengthened by celebrations of Ashada, Onam, Christmas and Women’s day.

In the year 2020-21 Mrs Prema Muralidhar accepted the leadership of the club with Mrs Latha Ashok as the secretary. In spite of the pandemic we could do many social service projects like distributing N-95 masks for the Asha workers and clothe mask for the cashew factory workers, providing hearing aid for a needy woman, supplying garments for the inmates of an old age home and many more. The first online project in the district ‘awareness programme in breastfeeding was conducted by our club in which the chairman Mrs Varija Jagdish was the chief guest. We could also celebrate friendship online and offline. We preferred physical gathering for the official visit of chairman and the same was well appreciated by the chairman for arranging in a systematic and grand manner.

Mrs Latha Ashok is the president for the year 2021-22 and Mrs Srilatha N K, the secretary. The district ISO Mrs Rajani Bhat was the installation officer for the ceremony held on 12th July 2021. Till date we have conducted the projects of Vanamahotsava, Clearing the bushes in the premises of an anganvadi, Providing lunch for the 35 inmates of an old age home, Breastfeeding awareness week and Distribution of dry fruits and soap for pregnant women, Independence day celebration and distribution of thermo-flask and breakfast for the 32 inmates of an old age home and hair donation by a member for the cancer patients.
