About Our Place

Chikmagalur is alternatively spelt as Chikkamagaluru which literally means "The town of the younger daughter" in Kannada. The town is said to have been given as a dowry to the younger daughter of Rukmangada, the legendary chief of Sakkarepatna and hence the name. Deep in the foothills of the Western Ghats, Chikmagalur draws in-the-know travelers in search of a green getaway. Located close to the region’s hilltop temples, coffee plantations, and national parks, the district capital’s biggest surprise is that it’s retained its off-the-beaten-path ambiance. Mullayanagiri which is the highest peak in Karnataka is located in Chikmagalur. This place is a tourist’s paradise containing hill stations like Kemmanagundi and Kudremukh and waterfalls like Manikyadhara, Hebbe, Kallathigiri and many more. Coffee is said to have been first cultivated in India in Chikmagalur and is also known as the Coffee-land of Karnataka. 
Popular Indian lore says that on a pilgrimage to Mecca in the 16th century Baba Budan, a revered Sufi saint from Karnataka state, discovered for himself the wonders of coffee. In his eagerness to grow coffee himself at home, he smuggled seven coffee beans out of the Yemeni port of Mocha which were hidden in his beard. On his return, he planted the beans on the slopes of the Chandragiri Hills in Chikmagalur district. This hill range was later named after him as the Baba Budan Hills (Baba Budangiri).
 

About Club

Innerwheel Club of Chikmagalur was formed on 03-04-1969 being registered on 01-05-1969 with 24 members. Today we stand high with a total of 102 members. 
    IWC of Chikmagalur along with Rotary club of Chikmagalur formed a trust called ‘Chikmagalur Rotary Innerwheel Trust (R)’ in 1992-93 under which we run an old age home called “JEEVANSANDHYA- Home for the aged”.
    A girl child Sandhya was adopted by our club in 1995-96. Sandhya is a qualified Nurse now.
    Our club got its flag in the year 2003-04, made by Mrs.Kavitha Niyath and was released by the Charter President Mrs. Bhagirathi Shivegowda.
    Our club has hosted: 
•    District Assembly in the year 1978-79 & 1999-2000.
•    District Rally in the year 1991-92, 1993-94, 2003-04 & 2012-13.
•    District Golden ISO Meet in the year 2017-18.
•    Orientation for the Club Office bearers of District 318 in 2016-17. 
    Mrs.Kavitha Niyath, the first ever member from our club to enter the District office was elected as the District ISO in 2017-18, Dist Editor in 2018-19, Dist Secretary in 2019-20, Dist Treasurer in 2020-21 and Dist Vice Chairman in 2021-22.
    We celebrated the Golden Jubilee of our club in the year 2019-20 in Chikmagalur in the gracious presence of the Association President 2019-20 Mrs. Mamta Gupta.
    It’s our pride to say that, we have members from families where ladies from 3 different generations are our members, starting from charter member to newly inducted member.
