A Brief History of Inner Wheel District 318

Inner Wheel District 318 has been through various evolutionary stages to reach its present status.
Inner Wheel District 317 in the old Mysore state was formed on 20th of April 1968 comprising of The Inner Wheel club of Bangalore, Bangalore North, Bangalore South, Mysore, Shimoga and Sakleshpur. Tumkur and Hassan joined the District within few months. This was the third District formed in our Association.

In 1969, Rotary Districts were being reorganised and all the Inner Wheel clubs belonging to District 317 became part of the new District 318. The Charismatic Mrs. Sheila Irani was installed as the first District Chairman of District 318 on 24th July 1970.

As the Inner Wheel movement picked up momentum, its growth necessitated further bifurcation of the District in 1977 into 318 and 319

Today District 318 has 45 clubs with a total of 1486 members. The District is spread over eight revenue Districts of Karnataka namely – Chikmagalur, Chamarajanagar, Dakshina Kannada, Hassan, Kodagu, Mysore, Shivamogga and Udupi. The District measures 450 Kms from Byndoor in the North to Chamarajanagar in the South and 250 kms from Mangalore in the west to Arsikere in the East.

District 318 boasts of a rich and colourful history. Late Mrs. Sheila Irani was the first Association President from our District in the year 1980-81. She was earlier Association Secretary in the year 1977-78. PDC Mrs Mitra Prabhu has served as the Association Secretary in 2011-12. We are proud of their achievements in bringing our District on the National scene.

The three major annual District events are The District Assembly, The District Rally and The District Conference. Apart from fixed District Programmes we also have Club Officers Training, District Officers Training Institute, ISO meet and so on. A District Directory and a souvenir are published every year. Other than this E-Bulletins will be released at regular intervals. The Chairman also brings out Newsletters.
It is an honour and a privilege for District 318 to have completed 52 glorious years.

1967-68 : District 317 was formed with Mrs. Malathi R. Rao as the Chairman
1969-70 : District 318 was bifurcated from District 317
1970-71 : Mrs. Sheila Irani became the first District Chairman of District 318
1977-78 : District 319 was formed after bifurcation of District 318
1977-78 : PDC Mrs. Sheila Irani served as Treasurer of the Association of Inner
Wheel Clubs in India and Srilanka
1978-79 : PDC Mrs. Mohana Chakrapani served as Treasurer of the Association
of Inner Wheel Clubs in India and Srilanka

1980-81 : Mrs. Sheila Irani was the Association President of Association of Inner Wheel Clubs in India & Srilanka
1981 : Association Council Meet was held in Mysore for the first time when
Mrs. Meena Sannath was District Chairman
1995-96 : Association Council Meet was held in Mysore for the second time
when Mrs. Krupalini Urs was the District Chairman

1998-2000 : Mrs. Sheila Irani was the honorary Secretary of IIW Representative Forum
2000-01 : Incoming Chairmans institute was held in Mysore for the first time
when Mrs. Jannavi Murthy was the District Chairman
2008 : Website of District 318 was launched when Mrs. Shalini Nayak was
District Chairman
2009 : Association Council Meet was hosted by IWC Surathkal in
Kudremukh when Dr. Sita Shastry was District Chairman
2011-12 : Mrs. Mitra Prabhu served as Secretary of the Association of Inner
Wheel Clubs in India
2016 : Inner Wheel Club of Mysore celebrates its Golden Jubilee
2017 : Inner Wheel Club of Shimoga celebrates its Golden Jubilee
2019 : Golden Jubilee of District 318
2019 : Inner Wheel Club of Chikmagalur celebrates its Golden Jubilee
2019 : South Zone meet was held in Mysore for the first time when Mrs. Anuradha Nandakumar was District Chairman
